Cornea Transplant

Keratoconus is a common eye disease that causes many vision problems such as poor vision, double vision, and blurred vision, among other issues. Unfortunately, there is no medicinal treatment (eye drops) for keratoconus. However, there are various surgical treatments, the most important of which is cornea transplant surgery.

An Overview of Keratoconus

The cornea is the transparent outer surface of the eye. God created it to protect the inner parts of the eye from germs and bacteria, acting as a protective shield for the eye. Normally, the cornea is spherical or slightly convex. Any change in this shape directly affects vision. This is precisely what makes keratoconus a serious disease, as the eye's surface stretches, thinning the cornea and transforming it into a conical shape, causing gradual distortion and weakening of vision.

What is Cornea Transplant Surgery?

Cornea transplant is one of the treatment options for keratoconus. It is a procedure that involves replacing the entire cornea or its damaged part with another artificial cornea or a cornea from a donor. This technique is used to restore vision.

Types of Cornea Transplant Surgery

There are various types of cornea transplant surgery. The appropriate type for the patient is chosen after conducting a variety of tests and determining the extent of damage to the corneal tissue. The most common types of cornea transplant surgery are:

  • Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) – or Full-Thickness Cornea Transplant: This type of cornea transplant surgery is used when the damage has affected both the inner and outer tissues of the cornea, in which case a complete replacement of the cornea is the optimal solution.
  • Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) or Partial Cornea Transplant: In this surgery, the cornea is not completely replaced. Instead, the damaged parts of the cornea, whether the outer or middle layers, are removed, and these layers are replaced with parts from another donor cornea.
  • Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK): In this type, only the inner layers of the cornea are replaced, while the middle and outer layers remain unchanged.
